Curriculum for Intestinal Ultrasound (IUS) Training

STEP 1: Essential Theoretical Framework
Objective: Acquire essential theoretical knowledge of intestinal ultrasound.

Format: Online module course (one-day lectures)

Content:

  • Basics about ultrasound technique.
  • Normal bowel anatomy and mesenteric structures.
  • Indications for IUS (IBD monitoring, abdominal pain, masses, etc.).
  • Key pathological findings (e.g., bowel wall thickening, vascularity, echo pattern, complications). Image interpretation principles, tips & tricks for avoiding pitfalls.
  • Case-based discussions and interactive image quizzes.

Outcome:

  • Certificate of theoretical completion ➡ Prerequisite for participation in hands-on training

STEP 2: Hands-on Workshop – Practical Scanning Techniques
Objective: Develop hands-on skills in performing IUS under expert guidance.

Format: Practical on-site workshop (1 full day, small groups)

Content:

  • Scanning technique
  • Scanning healthy volunteers to recognize normal bowel findings.
  • Practice image acquisition and measurement techniques.
  • Demonstration of pathological cases (real patients).

Outcome:

  • Confirmation of technical skill acquisition ➡ Eligible to start supervised practice in clinical setting

STEP 3: Supervised Practice at Certified Center & Home Training
Objective: Consolidate skills through regular clinical use and supervised interpretation.

Format:

  • Complete supervised training sessions at a certified reference center.
  • Continue performing IUS independently at your home center.

Content:

  • Perform and document intestinal ultrasound exams across various clinical scenarios.
  • Receive feedback from experienced IUS users.
  • Learn practical tips, advanced signs, and correlation with clinical/lab/endoscopic findings.
  • Complete a logbook documenting at least 50 supervised IUS exams at a certified training center. Is highly recommended to complete 100 exams independently in total per year before the STEP 4 to gain more confidence and improve skills and experience

Outcome:

  • Completion of clinical experience logbook + digital portfolio with 10 documented cases (images/video loops)
  • Mentor feedback and performance review

STEP 4: Final Certification – Theoretical & Practical Examination
Objective: Demonstrate comprehensive theoretical and practical competence in IUS.

Format:

  • Written test: Includes image-based questions, pathology recognition, and interpretation.
  • Practical exam: Perform live IUS exams on patients under examiner observation.

Outcome:

  • Certified ESPGHAN IUS Sonographer – Eligible for independent clinical use of intestinal ultrasound in diagnostic and monitoring contexts
  • To become a trainer, complete ≥500 scans + participating in mentoring activities.
