ESPGHAN Training Syllabus - European Training Requirements (ETRs) 2026

European Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition (PGHN) Exam issued by ESPGHAN and approved by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS)

The exam has been prepared and the MCQs and the clinical cases have been revised by the ESPGHAN Exam Working Group and members of ESPGHAN from different European countries based on the updated European Training Requirements (ETRs) in 2026 (ETR UEMS PGHN 2026 final (1).pdf). The MCQs and clinical cases are based on current guidelines and position papers of ESPGHAN as well as current PGHN literature. The portfolio records endoscopic procedures during PGHN training (upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy). The Exam has been developed in collaboration with CESMA and the UEMS. The exam will be conducted in English.

The European PGHN Exam will take place every year. The written part will be held online with expert proctoring in autumn. The oral part of the Exam will take place during the annual ESPGHAN exam (spring). The PGHN Exam does not replace or substitute existing national PGHN exams held by national bodies. The Exam offers a unique possibility to receive European certification especially if training is performed in countries without a PGHN training programme or without national certification. We expect the European PGHN Exam will raise the standards of PGHN training in Europe. We hope that national bodies will adopt European certification over time as the European PGHN Exam may become a label of excellence and may facilitate mobility throughout Europe.
